Police giving a helping hand to Hanan Hamid, who shot to fame as the fish-selling college girl, when she felt dizzy after a crowd mobbed her in Kochi on Thursday.

While Hanan Hamid, a final year undergraduate student from Kochi, is struggling to make a living, a spirited debate about her life is raging online. All this under the watchful eyes of the Kerala Police.

Cyber experts of the Kerala Police are closely following various social media groups to find out if the debates were taking the shape of a cyber assault. “We are closely following the trends, which do not show any organised attempts to defame the girl as of now. The raging debate over her should be seen as part of the Keralite’s social media behaviour and no complaints have been received as yet,” said Manoj Abraham, Inspector General of Police and Nodal Officer of the Kerala Police cyberdome.

Hanan, who sells fish in the city after college hours, has been in the limelight recently after a regional daily published a story on her difficult life circumstances. Though the story became an instant hit online, it later drew an equal wave of outrage with a section of people terming it cooked-up and unleashed a verbal assault on her and the publication.

Unable to bear the attack, Hanan on Thursday clarified that she was just a poor girl who was working hard to eke out a living.

“Having been faced with a tough life since I was a seventh standard student, I am now being criticised for no reason. I have taken up different jobs, from fish selling to dubbing and as a flower girl, all this to make ends meet,” a sobbing Hanan told the media.

Earlier in the day, her college authorities as well as several of her college mates had come out in her support and validated her dire situation through live videos in the social media.
