Birders of Kerala will join enthusiasts across the world for a four-day Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) starting Friday.
It is estimated that around one lakh bird enthusiasts will look for birds this time globally and upload the information online from February 13 to 16.
Last year, over 1,000 bird watchers recorded the presence of over 800 species from the country. In Kerala, the event witnessed 319 bird watchers joining the campaign leading to the identification of 280 species.
Bird Count India, an umbrella group of birding, nature, and conservation organisations, is coordinating the events in India.
A host of organisations, including KeralaBirder, WWF-Kerala, Travancore Natural History Society, Kottayam Nature Society, Cochin Natural History Society, Kerala Agricultural University Nature Club, Malabar Natural History Society, Hume Centre, and Indian Bird Conservation Network will be participating in the Kerala exercise.
The Social Forestry wing of the State Forest Department has also offered its support for the event, Dr. Nameer said.
The global GBBC event is organised by Cornell University and the Audubon Society in the United States of America, the organisers said.
