A 21-year-old girl was run over by a container lorry, which hit the scooter she was riding pillion at Kunnumpuram signal junction near Edappally on Friday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Karthika Vijayan, a resident of Maradu. Tragedy struck when she and her friend were on their way to appear for an examination at a city college.

The scooter ridden by Karthika’s friend was behind the container lorry. At Kunnumpuram junction, the lorry came to a halt when the signal turned red, following which the scooter rider tried to manoeuvre the vehicle along the left side.

At the same instance, the lorry driver also changed track to the left, and the scooter ran into the lorry. Under the impact of the collision, the scooter overturned, and the girls were thrown in opposite directions.

Karthika was thrown under the wheels of the lorry, resulting in her instantaneous death. However, her friend escaped with minor injuries.

The Edappally traffic police are on the hunt for the lorry which fled the spot following the accident. A case has been registered under IPC Section 304 (A) (Causing death by negligence).
