A two-member team from AFD (Agence Française de Développement) – the French development agency that is part funding Kochi Metro, visited metro’s Kakkanad alignment on Friday as part of its appraisal mission prior to sanctioning loan for the Rs 2,017 crore extension.

An amount of Rs. 840 crore has to be raised as loan for the 11.20-km-long Kakkanad extension. From Kakkanad, they visited Infopark, SmartCity and KINFRA park, since heads of these institutions had demanded a further 3-km-long extension from Kakkanad to their premises. They also held talks with Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson and Infopark CEO Hrishikesh Nair. Kakkanad extension is crucial to ensure passenger patronage for the metro.

The Kakkanad extension will take off eastward from international stadium.

“The AFD team already has a copy of the extension’s detailed project report (DPR). Once we get Centre’s sanction for the extension, the loan request will formally be taken up with AFD through the Department of Economic Affairs,” KMRL sources said.

Metro officials also told AFD team members of the metro’s 1.5-km-long Tripunithura extension that KMRL is hopeful of completing using its own funds and the international airport extension that has been envisaged after executing Tripunithura and Kakkanad extensions.

The AFD team comprising Priscille De Coninck (project manager, Sustainable and Transport division AFD, Paris) and Juliette Le Pannerer (project coordinator, AFD, Delhi) also held discussions with KMRL officials about preventing climate change through sustainable mobility. They discussed with metro officials integration of metro with other commuting modes, sustainable and environment friendly measures to carry the project forward.

With Kochi being adopted as a pilot city in India for carrying forward environmentally-sustainable projects, plans are being drawn out to have an eco-friendly urban mobility plan, involving KMRL and civic agencies. A project to increase green cover and check carbon emissions is on the cards, sources said.
