Chief Minister Oommen Chandy laid the foundation stone for six-lane flyovers costing Rs.185 crore at Vyttila and Kundannoor on the National Highway 47 Bypass in the city on Sunday.

The flyovers are expected to be commissioned by September 2017, a month prior to Kochi hosting the FIFA Under-17 World Cup matches. Highlighting the role played by road and allied infrastructure in ushering in economic development and creating jobs, Mr. Chandy said that his government had accorded top priority to the creation of such infrastructure during the past five years.

He highlighted the commencement of Kochi Metro’s trial run, the launch of 100 bridges in 400 days and Smart City’s phase one, scheduled touching down of small aircraft at Kannur airport on Monday, expected commissioning of Vizhinjam project in around 1,000 days and entrusting of light metro rail works in Thiruvanathapuram and Kozhikode to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) as prominent achievements of the UDF government. Kerala’s gains in primary school education could not be leveraged when it came to the IT sector. This was primarily because of opposition to computers by some sections of society. Mere sloganeering was not enough, Mr. Chandy said, referring to criticism that many projects were being launched before fully completing them.

The Chief Minister was visibly weak, after the harrowing pre-dawn accident involving his official car and stopovers at over a dozen functions all through the day.

Minister for Public Works V.K. Ebrahim Kunju said the State government decided to fund the four flyovers on the NH Bypass after the NHAI’s delay in kick-starting works.

Reacting to criticism by Left organisations that the foundation stone for the flyovers was being laid before getting administrative sanction and inviting tenders, Minister for Excise K. Babu said all paper work related to the flyovers was ready.

Earlier in the day, Left organisations had staged a protest at Vyttila, alleging that the stone for flyovers was being laid without the completion of formalities.
