Focus on farm sector, rebuilding in budget

The district panchayat budget, presented by vice president B.A. Abdul Muthalib on Friday, focuses on agricultural production and post-flood reconstruction. The surplus budget expects a revenue of ₹171.58 crore and expenditure of ₹170.72 crore. The budget has made handsome allocations to dairy, coconut and paddy cultivation and fish farming.

A sum of ₹10 lakh has been allocated for setting up a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in front of the district panchayat office and another ₹10 lakh for a clock tower. Allocation of ₹30 lakh has been made for renewal of flood-ravaged handlooms.

Drinking water projects have got ₹1 crore, while ₹2.75 crore has been earmarked for irrigation projects. A sum of ₹10 lakh will be spent for preparation of a flood-risk map. In the education sector, ₹5.7 crore has been allocated for comprehensive school development, and ₹7 crore for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and ₹1.5 crore for creation of rest rooms for women in schools.
