The Customs Air Intelligence Unit on Friday night took five persons into custody in connection with the alleged smuggling of 2 kg of gold through the Cochin international airport at Nedumbassery.

Three of them were passengers who came from Bahrain in a Gulf Air flight. The remaining two were at the airport to receive the smuggled item from the carriers. Customs officials said 750 grams of gold was found concealed in a mixer grinder brought by a resident of Chalissery, Malappuram, while the rest was in the form of paste and ornaments. The other two carriers were residents of Aluva, and the two who came to receive the consignment belonged to Kozhikode.
