Operation jointly coordinated by Coast Guard and merchant vessel MV Chrimson Knight

Five fishermen caught in the cyclonic weather off the coast of Ponnani were rescued in an operation coordinated jointly by the Coast Guard and merchant vessel MV Chrimson Knight on Thursday.

The fishing boat, Samool, which set out for fishing from Chettuva harbour on October 28, raised alarm and reported sinking around 12.30 a.m.

Following this, MV Chrimson Knight, which was passing along an area close to the fishing boat, was requested to rescue the fishermen.

The rescued fishermen were later transferred to a Coast Guard Ship and were brought to Kochi. They were then handed over to the fisheries department.

Warning

Fishermen had been advised by the State government against venturing into the sea in view of the rough sea and storm warning in the wake of the development of two systems, Kyaar and Maha, in the Arabian sea. On October 30, the State Disaster Management Authority asked fishermen not to venture into the sea and asked those out at sea to return to the nearest point ashore. The Coast Guard ships and aircraft have also been advising fishermen not to venture into the sea and those already at sea to return to harbours.

Merchant vessels transiting through area have been roped in to engage in warning and rescue operation. They have been requested to look out for fishing boats and advise them to return to harbour, said a defence communication.

Coast Guard ships and aircraft have been pressed into action following the cyclonic storm in the Arabian sea. A number of boats have taken shelter in different ports in Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep. Boats have been advised not to leave the shelters till the weather improves.
