A fire broke out in the top two floors of a building used for storing plastic and metal equipment and old newspapers at Samskara Junction near Palarivattom on Friday at around 6 p.m.
The ground floor was spared but all the items stored in the other two floors were consumed by the fire. Four fire tenders, three from the Gandhi Nagar unit and one from the Club Road unit of the fire and rescue department, rushed to the scene and doused the fire within an hour. They ensured that the fire did not spread to nearby buildings.
Though the reason was not immediately known, fire force personnel said that sparks from welding work carried out inside the building might have spread to the stored items, leading to fire.
