‘Njangalum Krishiyilekku’, a farming campaign to achieve self-sufficiency in farm production was launched at the district-level here on Thursday. District panchayat president Ullas Thomas, who inaugurated the campaign here, said each household should adopt the habit of cultivating vegetables and other crops.

It is expected that additionally around 200 hectares can be brought under farming under the campaign during the current financial year. Operation Vahini and Operation Breakthrough, meant to desilt rivers and drains to prevent flooding, had created favourable conditions for expanding farming activities, said a communication here.

Groups could take up farming activities and about 500 hectares could be brought under farming during the year, added Mr. Thomas.

Thrikkakara municipality vice chairman A.A. Ibrahimkutty was among those who participated in the programme.
