Farewell session today at council

October 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - KOCHI:

It is time to bid goodbye at the Kochi Corporation council on Wednesday.

The council led by Mayor Tony Chammany will meet for the last time on Wednesday. With the State Election Commission announcing the poll schedule and the model code of conduct coming into effect, no policy decision will be taken at the meeting.

The civic administration has listed just one item on the agenda for the business of the day. It will be a session to bid goodbye to all those who participated in the business of the House, said Mr. Chammany.

There would be a photo session followed by a dinner hosted by the Mayor.

A few prominent faces are unlikely to see the next session. A prominent one who is unlikely to return to the council will be Mr. Chammany himself.

Asked whether he would contest the next local body polls, Mr. Chammany said it would be up to his party to decide on the question.

As Kochi would have a woman mayor this time, the outgoing Mayor, it is learnt, would seek to widen his political career and may stake claim to contest the next Assembly election from West Kochi.

Some of the women civic administrators in the outgoing council, who are nursing the dream of becoming the first citizen of the city, refused to come on record on the question of seeking a fresh mandate.

Though a clear picture on who all will be contesting the election from the CPI(M) is yet to emerge, indications are that senior leader K.J. Jacob may seek another term.

M. Anilkumar, a young CPI(M) councillor and one of the most vocal civic representatives, may opt out of the race and return to legal practice. The party may choose to replace some of the prominent members with new faces this time.

Shyamala S. Prabhu, BJP councillor and one of the longest serving civic representatives, would seek another term in the council.

A few prominent faces in the Kochi Corporation Council are unlikely to see the next session.
