The Ezhattumugham-Thumpoormuzhi hanging bridge will be opened next month, improving the tourism prospects for the scenically set area near Angamaly on the Ernakulam-Thrissur border.
The hanging bridge will link the two banks of the Chalakudy river. The bridge has been built with columns and beams on both banks of the river linked with iron ropes.
The 210-metre bridge has been built at an expense of Rs. 4.97 crore. According to engineers at the Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Limited (KEL), who built the bridge, around 2,100 people could use the bridge at the same time.
An official release said the new bridge would give impetus to tourism in the north-eastern border of the district. The bridge will reduce the distance to Ezhattumugham substantially.
The north-eastern border of Ernakulam district is famed for its natural beauty and though thousands of tourists visit Ezhattumugham, Thumboormuzhi is usually not accessed by them. The opening of the bridge will change the scene to enable tourists to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. The opening of the bridge comes in tandem with the finalisation of a master plan for the entire area comprising Poru, Kalady, Malayattoor and Athirappally.
The area was declared first class tourist centre by the Department of Tourism, the press release said.
Those coming from the north can access these tourist sites from Chalakudy and those coming from the south can access the sites through Angamaly via Thuravoor.
The area had become more accessible with the District Tourism Promotion Council opening the Malayattoor-Kodanadu bridge to traffic recently, the press release added.
