Ernakulam, breeding ground for companies in Kerala

Emerges on top in terms of number of new companies registered in State. Of 1,438 companies, 483 opt for the district.

Ernakulam district continues to top districts in terms of the number of new companies registered in the State and Lakshwadeep region with 483 to its credit out of a total of 1,438 companies registered between April and September this year.

The standings

Data released by the office of the Registrar of Companies, Kerala and Lakshadweep, here showed that Thiruvananthapuram came a distant second with 218 new companies.

Thrissur was placed third with 203 companies for the first two quarters of the current financial year.

Lakshwadeep does not have any company registered during the period.

Kasaragod with 10 new companies; Wayanad with 12 and Idukki with 19 new companies are at the bottom with the lowest number of new companies for the first six months of the year.

Alappuzha district saw registration of 56 new companies; Kannur 19; Kollam 47; Kottayam 67; Kozhikode 123; Malappuram 68; Palakkad 52 and Pathanamthitta 36.

Companies registered for activities in computer and related fields beat chit companies to the second place during the first two quarters.

The data showed that a total of 225 new companies were registered for business in the sector. The number of chit companies registered during the period was 195.

A total of 55 new restaurants and hotels were registered; 137 companies for construction activities were registered and 162 manufacturing companies were registered during the period.

The other areas were retail trade (75); real estate activities (43); wholesale trade (74) agriculture, farming and plantation (36) and stocks and securities (8).

The RoC data also showed that 13 new public companies were registered with a total authorised capital of Rs.62 crore.

During the period under review no companies went into liquidation but a total of 84 companies were struck off the register under Secion 560 of the Companies Act 1956.
