A team led by District Collector S. Suhas cleaned the 1-km-long road beneath the Kochi metro corridor on the Muttom-Ambattukavu stretch on NH 66, kick-starting the Ente Clean Ernakulam initiative.
The initiative is spearheaded by the district administration, with cooperation from different government departments. A total of 208 NSS volunteers from Government Polytechnic, Kalamassery, and SCMS College, 65 from Anpodu Kochi, officials, people’s representatives and members of the public participated.
They divided themselves into groups comprising 20 each and participated in the clean-up drive. Mr. Suhas requested traders not to dump plastic and other refuse on pavements. More such schemes will be planned in the coming days, every fortnight, to understand challenges in clearing of garbage and to drive home the point of the need to ensure cleanliness of public spaces. Participants were given T-shirts, caps, masks and gloves.
Two earth movers were provided by construction equipment owners association, while Kudumbashree provided snacks and drinking water. Haritha Keralam and Suchitwa Mission too helped organise the initiative.
