Electronic park: government to make fresh move for land

May 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:59 am IST - KOCHI:

The State government has already announced its decision to make a fresh move to acquire land for hardware electronic park at Amballur in Piravom.

The project, floated a few years ago, had faced objection from certain quarters as the land envisaged to be taken over included wetland.

The new move would be aimed at taking over land which had been remaining idle for long, so that it could be fit for takeover under the revised guidelines being formulated by the government.

The greenfield electronics cluster at Kakkanad, proposed by Kinfra, is awaiting final clearance from the Union government.

The project, estimated to cost Rs.129.87 crore, will be set up in 75 acres of land near the Smart City and Infopark.

Central nod

The Kakkanad electronics park was among the 14 greenfield parks which were given in-principle approval by the Union government’s Department of Electronics and Information Technology. Kinfra, which is undertaking the project, will provide infrastructure for the park where units could be set up by private players.

According to a report of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, the demand for electronic products is expected to reach $ 400 billion by 2020.

India currently produces about three-million graduates every year, out of which, approximately 5,00,000 are engineers and IT professionals.

The domestic production of electronic components is too small to meet the demand. It has resulted in ever-increasing imports from countries such as China, Taiwan, and South Korea.
