A section of the merchants at the Kaloor market here alleged that poor concrete work over the cables of the Kerala State Electricity Board as part of the metro works resulted in water-logging in the region.
But officials of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation rejected the allegations stating that dumping of waste from the market had choked the drain located close to the market. The concrete work above the KSEB cables was done at least 20 to 25 centimetres above the level of the drain, they said.
Merchants in the market alleged that stagnation of dirty water had made life miserable for them and people visiting the area. They also alleged that the unscientific concrete work over the cables laid by the board led to the choking of drain water. DMRC officials countered the argument by stating that rampant dumping of slaughterhouse waste from the Kaloor market had led to the present situation. No waste material generated from the metro works was lying in the area, they said.
But metro officials pointed out that water-logging in the metro work site near the Jawaharlal Nehru international stadium was cleared in the morning. The piling up of waste over the cables and pipes crossing the drainage canal had resulted in water-logging in the area. It would occur again immediately after the next match as waste generated after a soccer match at the stadium usually gets dumped in to the drain, they said.
