The Kerala State Women’s Commission (KSWC) has registered a suo motu case over the alleged illegal detention of an 85-year-old woman at Pothanikkad by her daughter and family.

The other day, the Pothanikkad police rescued octogenarian Brijitha, who had been left to starve in squalid living conditions. The police booked her daughter on charges of not taking care of her aged mother and produced her before a magistrate at Kothamangalam.

Intervening in the issue, KSWC member Shiji Shivaji has directed the Revenue Divisional Officer to ensure the welfare of the woman, who has been admitted to a government hospital here.

A police investigation suggested a property dispute between the woman’s daughter and son, culminating in Brijitha’s illegal detention.

The KSWC has also launched a probe into the alleged molestation of a student at an engineering college near Airapuram by three students. The Kunnathunad police have taken into custody three persons in connection with the case. As per the complaint, the accused molested the student in the guise of helping her remove Holi colours from her clothes.
