Crack on rail track: train services hit

Local resident noticed fracture near Aluva

A tragedy was averted on Monday morning following a chance intervention by a local resident who happened to notice a crack on the railway track at Pulinchodu near Aluva, limiting the damage to disruption of train services through the section for over an hour.

The crack was first noticed at 7.20 a.m. near Pulinchodu between Aluva and Kalamassery stations and was promptly reported to the Aluva Stationmaster who immediately blocked the traffic for ensuring the safety of trains and speedy redressal of the problem.

The crack was detected minutes before the Pune-Ernakulam Poorna Express (Train No. 11097) was scheduled to pass through the section.

Following the problem, the train was immediately stopped, moments after it left Aluva station.

Workers were pressed into service and trains were allowed to pass through the section at a speed not exceeding 20 kilometres per hour. Poorna Express was detained for 47 minutes while a few passenger trains, including the Guruvayur-Edamon, were held for up to 30 minutes. The train services were restored to normal by around 9 a.m.

‘No safety threat’

The Railways clarified that there was “no safety threat and that the cracks on tracks is associated with seasonal changes”. Usually such a rupture is detected by the loco pilot of the first train to pass through the section from the change in sound. At sections with the interlocking signalling facility, such issues are detected automatically.
