Court directive on additional classes

June 19, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - Kochi:

The High Court on Thursday directed the State government to take steps such as collection of data of children under 14 years and the educational need of the area concerned before processing the applications seeking to bring Standard V under lower primary schools and Standard VIII under upper primary schools.

Justice Jayasankaran Nambiar directed the government to complete the process in four months. The court passed the order on petitions filed by school managements seeking to upgrade their schools by starting additional classes. The court observed that unless the government put in place the machinery for implementing the provisions of the Right to Education Act and Rules, it would be an exercise in futility to direct the State to process the individual applications seeking upgrade of existing schools.
