Corporation to launch Mission Kochi

Kochi Corporation will launch a campaign for completing 32 projects in 393 days.

A host of projects that were announced in the annual budgets as well as a few new ones will be implemented through the campaign ‘Mission Kochi 15-08-15,’ Kochi Mayor Tony Chammany told mediapersons here on Friday.

The completion of the main office building of the local body at Marine Drive has been given top priority.

The next cabinet meeting is likely to clear the proposal for enhancing the estimate of the building by 25 per cent.

Steps for setting up a municipal solid waste plant at Brahmapuram will be launched during the period. The pilot phase of the e-governance programme will be launched.

The Animal Birth Control programme for street dogs too forms part of the mission programme.

The owners of pet dogs will be asked to get licence for their canines. Chips will be implanted in pet dogs to prevent the dumping of aged and sick dogs on the streets. The project would be launched on September 28, World Rabies Day, he said.

The Clean Kerala Company of the State government will set up a project for managing plastic refuse. Plastic collected by the local body will be shredded at the unit. The local body would get Rs. 2 a kg for plastic taken by the company, Mr. Chammany said.

An exclusive hotel for women run by women would be opened at Hotel Libra owned by the Kochi Corporation at Ernakulam North. A private agency would be roped in for running the establishment.

Women coming to the city for job interviews and other purposes could stay safely in the hotel, he said.

Deputy Mayor B. Bhadra, chairpersons of the Standing Committees of the Corporation, Soumini Jain, Essy Joseph, T.K. Ashraf, and Corporation secretary A.S. Anuja, were among those who attended.

Two officials have been put in charge of the projects. A file-tracking system for speedy implementation and follow-up measures has been devised. Besides the revenue sources of the local body, loans would be raised for the projects. Some projects will be implemented in build-operate-transfer mode. As none of the projects require land acquisition, they could be implemented in a speedy manner. The progress of the projects would be reviewed weekly, he said.

The local body has performed well in delivering its mandate including waste management and ensuring navigable city roads, he said.
