Corpn. suspends three in ‘file scrapping’ case

: Stung by criticism from political rivals just ahead of the local body polls, the United Democratic Front-led Corporation on Wednesday suspended three employees in connection with the recovery of around 70 sacks of documents belonging to the civic body from a couple of scrap dealers in the city earlier this week.

Junior health inspector Madhu, and permanent contingent workers Johnson and Joshy have been suspended on charge of illegally trying to sell official Corporation documents and files after a detailed department-level inquiry conducted by the Corporation secretary V.R. Raju.

Besides, as an additional measure, show cause notice would be served to health inspector Prabhash and six casual labour roll workers would be kept away from duty.

The Corporation was embarrassed after a group of Bharatiya Janata Party activists fished out sacks of documents abandoned near the Panamppilly Nagar RoB and at PT Usha Nagar.

The documents included RTI applications, ownership certificates, audit objections for the 2013-14 fiscal and registers on fund utilisation for garbage removal and structural designs of hotels and shopping complexes. BJP dubbed the incident as part of a conspiracy to bail out successive governing committees of the UDF and the Left Democratic Front, which presided over the Corporation for years.

CPI(M) also made it a campaign plank by describing it as a cover-up for the illegal activities of the UDF-led Corporation.

Mr. Raju maintained the position that the files belonged to the previous years and the employees were actually shifting them to the Corporation office at Padiyath.

“They were just some old files with no significant links to the present or previous councils.

As part of cleaning up the office under the Smart City programme, our cleaning staff had shifted them to the Padiyath office on Friday night along with some old furniture.

However, somebody might have stolen it from there and sold to the scrap dealers,” he had said.
