Container lorry strike called off

300 metres of the road leading to LNG terminal to be opened for parking

The four-day-old strike by container carrier operators serving the Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal was called off on Tuesday after discussions on the key issue of parking space for the vehicles between the district administrators and representatives of the lorry owners.

District Collector S. Suhas assured the lorry owners that 300 metres of the road leading to the LNG terminal will be opened up for the lorries to be parked in one file, said a spokesman for the lorry owners and workers after the talks. The opening of the LNG road solves a part of the problem, said the spokesman as he called for a more permanent solution to the issue of sufficient parking space.

The lorry owners have also agreed to pay a parking fee of ₹250 per day for 40-foot container carriers and ₹120 per day for 20-foot containers at the designated parking areas developed by various agencies.

More space

It was also decided at the meeting, chaired by the District Collector, that opening up about three acres of space at the Kerala Industrial Enterprises freight station on Container Road will be considered. The KSIE space, if opened up, will be able to accommodate about 150 vehicles.

The meeting also assured the lorry owners and operators that the parking space being developed by Indian Oil Corporation will be ready by September this year. The space provided by IOC along with the existing space developed by Bharat Petroleum Corporation will be able to accommodate about 200 container carriers.

Token protest

Meanwhile, the Container Carrier Owners’ Welfare Association has said that it planned to make a token protest after August 16 demanding that 10 acres of space within the designated Special Economic Zone on Vallarpadam Island be denotified to develop as a permanent parking facility.
