Container trailer lorry workers have threatened to go on strike.
Trade Union Coordination Committee representing container trailer lorry workers mostly engaged in moving goods to and from the Kochi port and the container transhipment terminal here have threatened to go on an indefinite strike from January 27.
The lorry workers are demanding, among other things, implementation of conditions spelt out in the long-term agreement and withdrawal of, what they called, illogical traffic rules.
General convenor of the coordination committee Charles George claimed in a statement here on Monday that majority of the trailer owners were not paying their workers salaries and benefits according to conditions set in the long-term settlement reached in February last year. The long-term settlement was reached in the presence of the ministers for Labour and Ports.
The statement also blamed the State government and the port for not taking steps to introduce pre-payment of lorry charges to bring uniform charges for the services. The coordination committee also alleged that the police harassed trailer crew and there was not enough parking facility on Vallarpadam Island.
