District Collector S. Suhas visited Chellanam on Sunday to review the progress of the work on establishing geotextiles bag walls along the coast as a shore protection measure in the areas worst affected by sea erosion.
According to a pressnote, the Collector’s visit was ahead of an official review of the work.
Officials from the Department of Irrigation informed the Collector that 3,675 geotextile bags had been distributed out of a total of 4,450 bags that had been procured for the work.
The remaining 775 bags have been kept in reserve for any emergency works. The bags are filled with sand and placed along the coast in a wall formation to protect the shore.
The Collector assured the people of all official support to begin the geotextiles tube work that had been stalled for a while now.
Meets students
The Collector visited the North Velankanni church and had his lunch from a fisherman’s family before he met students from St. Teresa’s and St. Albert’s Colleges, who were helping with filling the geotextile bags with sand.
He congratulated the students for their voluntary work.
K.V. Ambrose, tehsildar, was among the officials who accompanied the Collector during his visit.
