Social auditing is under way at 20 schools in Ernakulam district to track and improve the quality of Roshni, the initiative to acclimatise children of migrant workers socially, culturally and educationally with their host State and to enable them to be on par with mainstream society.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the official website of Roshni here on Saturday. A total of 610 of the total 2,500 children of migrant workers in the district are pursuing informal education in these schools through the scheme which won the Skoch Award instituted by Skoch Foundation for innovative schemes for social welfare this year.
The programme was launched by the district administration to impart additional coaching to the children in English and their mother tongue. “The problems faced by children of migrant workers was their difficulty in comprehending Malayalam and also their inability in getting food in time since their parents would leave for work early in the morning,” District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla said on Thursday.
Keeping this in mind, the informal coaching classes begin an hour before regular classes, prior to which they are served breakfast too. Apart from better handling of languages, the children improved their skills in making artefacts too, he said.
