CIFT designs fish vending machines

The State government will distribute fish vending kiosks developed by the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology in Kochi to fisherwomen in a bid to overhaul the present system of open roadside sale of fish. The new system will be a hygienic and help the vendors improve their occupation.

The State fisheries department has decided to adopt the CIFT-designed kiosks, which have been found to be ideal for fish retailing, said a press release from CIFT here. The department has allotted ₹20 lakh to the Theeramaithri wing of the Society for Assistance to Fisherwomen (SAF) to purchase 20 units of the kiosks on an experimental basis. These units will be given to fisherwomen who are engaged in retailing.

CIFT signed an MoU with SAF on Monday. The MoU envisages fabrication and installation of 20 of the refrigerated mobile fish vending kiosks.
