The Special Investigation Team probing the twin ATM robberies accounting for a collective loot of ₹35 lakh, recovered one of the three missing ATM cash boxes, which the six-member gang had dumped from their vehicle while fleeing with the money stolen from the ATM at Irumpanam.
The box was recovered from an isolated stretch alongside the Seaport-Airport Road after SIT took Pappu Palsingh aka Pappy, the second accused, to the robbed ATM and then retraced the gang’s escape route as part of evidence collection on Monday. The police secured his custody last Friday after he was brought here from a jail in Haryana on a production warrant issued by a Thripunithura court.
“He had stood on guard with an iron rod outside the ATM when Haneef and Nazeem, the first and the third accused, broke into the ATM using a gas cutter and spray painted the surveillance camera,” said SIT head and inspector T. Uthamdas.
Pappy was produced in the Thripunithura court on Monday after the five-day police custody expired and he was remanded in judicial custody for two weeks.
The Kalamassery police are likely to seek his custody shortly in connection with the probe into an attempted ATM break-in. His custody may also be sought by the Kottayam police on two similar attempts and by the Thrissur police on the ATM robbery at Koratty.
