Case against boat operator

Vadakkekara police have registered a case against the operator of the boat which sank at Gothuruthu on Sunday.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the Fisheries Department had not given permission to any boat operator to convert a fishing boat into a passenger ferry. The operator would be summoned, and the boat would be examined, the police said.

The ferry sank with passengers, crew and vehicles at Gothuruthu on Sunday evening. No casualties were reported in the incident.

Meanwhile, the Chendamangalam panchayat on Monday held an all-party meet to discuss the issue and decided to resume the boat service at the earliest. The local body had given permission to the ferry operator to conduct service between Thuruthipuram Chathedath and Gothuruth five months ago.

The meeting also decided to remove all the unutilised tree poles of Chinese fishing nets on the river stretch.
