Cancer centre society to be registered within a week

The government has released an order to register a society to make the Kochi cancer research centre a functioning entity.

The government order dated October 6 has empowered the Special Officer for the cancer centre, Asha Thomas, to set up a modern cancer institute here.

Dr. Thomas told The Hindu that registration of the society would be done within a week.

To begin with, the Special Officer is expected to take the necessary action to convert the building identified at Government Medical College, Ernakulam, to house the out-patient department for the cancer centre.

As far as work on the ground is concerned, the design for the conversion works needs to be vetted by Special Officer (Technical) V.P. Gangadharan.

The design is expected to be made in consultation with experts from Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, and Malabar Cancer Centre. However, since funds are yet to be made available to the society, the Health Department will have to approve the design and estimates.
