The Kalamassery police on Friday registered a case for attempted ATM robbery.
The attempted break-in at an ATM of Axis Bank near Edappally Toll was noticed by the agency entrusted with filling cash and maintaining the ATM around 8.45 a.m.
“The agency received an online alert to the ATM being down following which its representatives visited the place and came to know about the attempted robbery.
“A section of the ATM machine was found broken, exposing the control panel though no cash was lost. We cannot be sure about the exact timing of the attempt,” said P.G. Madhu, Sub Inspector, Kalamassery.
The police, however, found it to be a crude attempt devoid of sophistication.
“The use of equipment like gas cutters, the modus operandi of professional ATM robbers, has been ruled out. We are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas,” he added.
The police have registered a case invoking Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 454 (lurking house-trespass or house-breaking in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment) 461 (dishonestly breaking open receptacle containing property), 511 (attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment), 380 (theft in dwelling, housing etc).
