Biennale to raise ₹10 cr for flood-hit

The Kochi-Muziris Biennale Foundation is planning to raise ₹10 crore for the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund for flood victims. The amount will be mobilised by the Biennale Foundation through an auction of works by world famous artists at Mumbai, a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan here on Monday was informed.

Foundation secretary Riyaz Komu said the biennale to be held from December 12, 2018 to March 29, 2019 would pitchfork Kochi to the status of India’s cultural capital. It would focus on social issues. As many as 90 artists from 31 countries were expected to participate. Mr. Komu said the biennale would attract more than 600,000 visitors.

Children’s biennale

A children’s biennale would also be organised with the help of schools. Mr. Vijayan said the Education Department would extend its support for the event. He directed officials to expedite the acquisition of land for the construction of a permanent venue for the biennale.

Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran, Higher Education Minister K.T. Jaleel, Additional Chief Secretary P.H. Kurian and other senior officials were present.
