Be the voice of the voiceless, lawyers told

December 14, 2014 08:10 am | Updated 08:10 am IST - KOCHI:

Governor P. Sathasivam on Saturday urged lawyers and journalists to be the voice of the voiceless and to act as the light that removes darkness in society.

Inaugurating a symposium ‘Lawyers: The Sentinels of Democracy’ organised by the Kerala Union of Working Journalists, Hind Mazdoor Sabha and the lawyers’ fraternity to mark 50 years of legal profession and 60 years of public life of trade union leader Thampan Thomas in Kochi, the Governor said lawyers and journalists were responsible for exposing all those who broke the law of the land and for protecting the rights of the people.

Citing the example of late V.R. Krishna Iyer, who, in his opinion, had set a benchmark for people practicing law, the Governor said the legendary jurist would continue to remain among the people for long.

He said no person should be denied justice on economic grounds and urged lawyers to promote the system of free legal aid. In his keynote address, Supreme Court judge Kurian Joseph described Thampan Thomas as the pride of Kerala and recalled his contribution towards ensuring the rights of the working class.
