Govt. to ensure protection of Excise officials

Excise Minister K. Babu has said that government will ensure the protection of Excise officials considering the adverse condition prevailing in the State following the implementation of new liquor policy.

Speaking after inaugurating the 12 Excise Arts and Sports festival at Thrissur Government Engineering College on Friday, the Minister urged the public to co-operate with the government for the effective implementation of the policy.

The Minister said the government would make amendments to the Abkari Act.  “The amendment will ensure protection of Excise officials in Abkari cases. The government plans to add one more sub-section in Section 33 (2) of the Abkari Act. Strict punishment will be ensured for people found guilty under Section 186, 89 and 331 of the IPC,” he said.

The Minister said that physical fitness was important for the officials. Many officials, who were selected in sports quota, had abandoned physical training after their appointment. Apart from the annual sports events, the Excise officials should pay attention to the regular physical fitness training, he added.   

Therambil Ramakrishnan, MLA, presided over the function. K. Radhakrishnan, MLA, City Police Commissioner Jacob Job, Excise Commissioner Anil Xavior, Thrissur Government Engineering College Principal Varghese Job, Sports Council district president Igni Mathew, Excise Additional Commissioner R.K. Sreekumaran Chettiyar and others participated.  

Sports competitions will be held in 18 categories.
