Director General of Shipping Malini V. Shankar dedicated a unique seafarers’ memorial at the Merchant Navy Club on Wednesday.
The memorial, consisting of a 16-m long and 15-m tall sculpture designed by P.V. Ramachandran, known as Maraprabhu Ramachandran, stands as a sobering reminder of the dangers of the sea besides being a testament to the strength of the community’s joint efforts, said a note in this regard. It depicts the survival instinct of the community against odds. Dr. Shankar described seafarers as the propelling force behind world trade. She said the modern world owed it to the thousands of seafarers who sacrificed their lives at sea to ensure a modern way of life, which we all enjoyed today.
Cochin Port chairperson M. Beena hoped the memorial would attract tourists arriving at the port.
