September 25, 2010 03:03 pm | Updated 03:03 pm IST - KOCHI:

Train services on the Kottayam-Ernakulam route which remained disrupted from the early hours of Friday was restored by around 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Services through the route had to be cancelled after a landslip in Mulanthuruthy deposited large quantity of slushy mud on the tracks and over a coach of the Thiruvananthapuram-Mangalore Express which happened to pass through the area at that time.

Southern Railway sources said that the mud was completely removed from the track by the afternoon. A special train carrying the divisional manager was the first one to ply through the tracks.

The Ernakulam-Thiruvananthapuram Parasuram Express will be the first passenger train to pass through the area after the clearing works.

The coach trapped in the tracks after getting caught in the middle of the landslip was cleared of the mud and removed in morning. Thereafter the track was cleared of the mud and alignment of the tracks was verified.

It is learnt that the railway sources is considering precautionary measures like erection of wall in the landslip-prone area along the route.
