Teachers’ union comes out against Maharaja’s Principal

N.L. Beena says allegations against her are baseless

January 17, 2017 08:33 am | Updated 08:33 am IST - KOCHI:

The All Kerala Government College Teachers Association (AKGCTA) has accused N.L. Beena, Principal of Ernakulam Maharaja’s College, of making derogatory remarks against students on the campus.

In a release issued here, K. Ramakrishnan, president of the organisation, alleged that the Principal had made a statement that girls come to the college to cosy up to male students. She had also sent indecent messages to teachers and had tried to defame a young faculty member, he said.

Mr. Ramakrishnan alleged that Ms. Beena had also ousted students, who had excelled in sports and arts events, from the campus over the past one year. The authorities should probe these incidents and take appropriate action, he said.

Denying the allegations, Ms. Beena said the leadership of the AKGCTA had hatched a conspiracy against her by raising baseless allegations. The Principal said that she had asked students not to waste time and focus on their studies in view of the poor results. Students, whom they claim to have excelled in arts and sports, were automatically removed from the rolls as they lacked the attendance stipulated by the university, she said.

Ms. Beena said that the association leadership should stop spreading such lies and focus on teaching. They should be more concerned about protecting the interests of the faculty members and their career improvement rather than going behind such baseless allegations, she said.
