Ombudsman's directive to grama panchayat

June 18, 2010 04:15 pm | Updated 04:15 pm IST - KOCHI:

Ombudsman for local self-government institutions M.R. Hariharan Nair has directed the Thrikkakkara grama panchayat authorities to take all necessary steps to resolve the crisis emanating from its unscientific disposal of garbage.

Mr. Nair visited the dumping yard, a naturally-formed trench sandwiched between the offices of the grama panchayat and the district panchayat, and the residential areas hit by the overflowing garbage during the heavy rain last week.

Lives of families living in Kiliyankal and Alapat Nagar residential areas adjacent to the dumping yard were affected when stinking waste packaged in plastic covers floated into their properties.
