Old Mattancherry bridge to re-open on Friday

The ongoing repair works of the old Mattancherry bridge would be completed by Friday, and two/ three-wheelers would be able to resume their journey through it, PWD (Roads and Bridges wing) officials said.

The replacement of a few old and worn-off wooden planks took over a week, reportedly because it was tough to get ‘tambakam' wood required for the purpose. This caused huge traffic hold ups on the approach roads to the new BOT bridge since two and three wheelers too had to use it to reach West Kochi.

Bad roads

The PWD's inability to resurface the perennially-potholed road linking the Venduruthy and Mattancherry BOT bridges made matters worse for commuters and pedestrians. The narrow and ill-maintained stretch linking the BOT bridge with Thopumpady Junction, has further compounded matters. Haphazard parking of container lorries on the road from the BOT bridge to Alexander Parambithara Bridge has been causing accidents on the stretch.

T.I. Jose, Ernakulam Executive Engineer of the PWD, said that apart from wooden planks, metals sheets too have been arranged to repair the old Mattancherry bridge. “Temporary restoration works have been done on the Venduruthy bridge-BOT bridge stretch. Full restoration work would be done after the monsoon, in which a drain and footpath would be built in front of the Naval Base. The work has been tendered.”

He said that plans are afoot to widen the narrow road from the BOT bridge to Thopumpady, and also the road towards Palluruthy.
