Nirmala Kannan takes charge as CMO of Southern Naval Command

Surgeon Rear-Admiral Nirmala Kannan on Thursday assumed charge as the Command Medical Officer (CMO) of the city-based Southern Naval Command.

The Rear-Admiral is spouse of Vice-Admiral Bhagavatheswaran Kannan, programme director of Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV), and younger sister of Nirupama Rao, India’s Foreign Secretary.

A recipient of the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM), Rear-Admiral Kannan was commissioned in the Navy in August 1977 and is a post-graduate in obstetrics and gynaecology. The notable tenures of the Rear-Admiral include command of the Navy hospital INHS Kalyani. She has also held the posts of executive officer of INHS Kalyani and INHS Asvini.

The Rear-Admiral has worked in all Command Hospitals of the Navy as well as the Armed Forces Clinic in New Delhi. An alumnus of the Defence Service Staff College (DSSC), Wellington, Rear-Admiral Kannan was the first armed forces woman officer to graduate from the National Defence College, New Delhi. The Rear-Admiral’s only son is a serving Captain in the Army Medical Corps (AMC).
