The Kochi corporation council will meet on Wednesday to amend the earlier decision to assign land to some trusts in the city. The Mayor has convened an emergency meeting to discuss the issue.
The decision to allot land owned by the civic body to construct memorials to former Culture Minister T.K. Ramakrishnan, former Kochi Mayor E.K. Narayanan and a former councillor Koru Asan had run into controversy. The Congress-led UDF councillors opposed the move stating that the CPI (M) leaders in the council were attempting to take possession of the priceless land in the city under the guise of setting up memorials. A.B. Sabu, the UDF leader in the council, had also questioned the decision in the Kerala High Court.
The civic authorities informed the court that it didn't intend to go ahead with the proposal following the resistance against the move. As the decision to assign land was passed at the corporation council meeting, it would require the decision of the council to amend it, councillors pointed out.
Meanwhile, Mr. Sabu has filed a complaint with the Kochi Mayor stating that the letter informing the agenda of the emergency meeting lacked basic details. The agenda issued to the councillors stated that the meeting was convened to amend the decisions number 4 and 5 taken at the corporation council meeting held on March 30. Going by the details provided in the agenda, no one would be able to make out what was the issue involved in these decisions, he said.
Considering the seriousness of the issue, the civic authorities should have issued a detailed note, he said.
