The district has 17 people under home surveillance as part of precautionary measures taken against Ebola virus threat.
The people who have travelled to countries or neighbouring countries, where Ebola virus infection is a major health concern, are restricted to the 21 days.
Over the last three to four months, 152 people were under surveillance but the number had come down, said district medical officer, Dr. Haseena Mohammed.
People under surveillance are monitored twice a day by a team under the district surveillance officer.
These people are restricted to take any laboratory test or any self medication, said Dr. Mohammed.
People arriving at the Kochi airport and port are screened for their travel destinations over the last one month and are counselled by the medical officers at the transit points. Their addresses and contact numbers are then provided to the district surveillance team.
Dr. Vijayan, physician at the District General Hospital, heads the team that will treat any person who shows symptoms of the Ebola virus infection. The district had constituted rapid response teams that include doctors, nurses and paramedics who would swing into action if any case was reported, said Dr. Mohammed.
The team handling the patient would also go into home surveillance after coming in contact with the patient.
A second and third team would provide the back up if more cases were reported, said Dr. Mohammed.
