May 31, 2010 05:13 pm | Updated 05:13 pm IST - KOCHI:

Former Supreme Court judge V. R. Krishna Iyer said on Sunday that the success of democracy depended on constructive criticism.

The erosion in values in the society could be traced to the lack of people capable of pointing out shortcomings in the society.

He was giving away the C. P. Mammu award for smallscale newspapers to Kalapremi daily.

The award has been instituted by the Kerala State Hindi Prachar Sabha in memory of ‘Kerala Nadam' editor C. P.Mammu.

Minister for Transport, Jose Thettayil, said C. P. Mammu belonged to a genre of journalists known for indulging in criticism aimed at the betterment of Indian society. The former Ombudsman for local bodies, K.P.Radhakrishna Menon, presided over the programme.
