Assault on teacher: one more arrested

The Special Investigation Team, probing the assault on T.J. Joseph, a Malayalam teacher of Newman College, Thodupuzha, has arrested one more person.

The team, under P.N. Unniraja, Superintendent of Police, arrested Pareed, a native of Vazhakulam, from Mangalore on Thursday night. The team had been tracking Pareed for some time. He is believed to have driven the vehicle in which the group had travelled. It is learnt that Pareed had moved to Kollam after the assault and had been hiding in different places since then.

The police have now arrested five out of seven persons involved in the attack on the teacher on July 4. Mr. Joseph's right palm was chopped off by the attackers that day, while he was returning from church, in protest against some references in a question paper prepared by him. Some religious groups had alleged that the references amounted to blasphemy.
