A festival to protect organic brinjal

The Mararikulam North grama panchayat here will organise a seven-day festival here from December 27 to create awareness of the dangers of Bt brinjal, Kerala Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac said on Wednesday,

The former director of the Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology P.M. Bhargava would inaugurate the festival, in which over 50 scientists and about 100 delegates from various universities and scientific institutions across the country, besides farmers, policymakers and representatives of government and non-governmental organisations, would participate.

National seminar

A highlight would be a two-day national seminar from January 2, focussing on the genetically modified cousin of the popular, indigenous Mararikulam brinjal.

With the National Science Congress being held in Thiruvananthapuram from January 4, a large number of scientists arriving in the State were expected to participate in the brinjal fest as well, the Minister told a press conference here.

All India Democratic Women’s Association vice-president and Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat would inaugurate a Mararikulam Brinjal Protection Conference on January 3, apart from launching three varieties of brinjal pickle produced by Marari Marketing Limited.

Malayalam film actor Mohanlal would inaugurate a week-long agricultural and science exhibition on December 27. Actor-scriptwriter Sreenivasan would inaugurate a documentary festival on Bt technology, which would also screen one by filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt.
