ZPTC, MPTC elections: TSEC to set up 123 counting centres

Counting to be held in 3 stages; MPTC contestants asked to appoint two agents each

The counting of votes for the three-phased election to zilla parishad and mandal parishad territorial constituencies would be taken up on May 27, for which the election authority has been setting up 123 counting centres in different parts of the State, said State Election Commissioner V. Nagi Reddy.

Also, adequate security arrangements have been made at the strong rooms where ballot boxes have been stored, he added.

The counting process would be held in three stages starting with the polling station-wise counting, which would then be followed by MPTC and ZPTC-wise counting. The MPTC contestants have been asked to appoint two agents each for checking the validity of the ballot papers before sending them to returning officers.

No mistakes

Mr. Nagi Reddy admitted that a few instances of mistakes in the printing of ballot papers were brought to the notice of the commission. These errors were because the commission had less time to hold the elections.

He said the elections were held in a free and fair manner and there were no reports of candidates being declared as elected unanimously by offering inducements or threatening the opponents to withdraw from the contest.

Not a single instance of re-poll was necessitated owing to the effective measures taken by the election authority.

He said the term of the sitting MPTCs and ZPTCs would come to an end on July 3 and the newly-elected members would assume office on July 4. The election for the ZP chairman would be held any time after July 5 except for Khammam where the term of the ZP chairman would expire on August 5.

Replying to queries, he said the commission was geared up to hold elections to the municipal bodies. Though polling in three phases was satisfactory, it was noticed that there was drop in the voting percentage in the ZPTC and MPTC elections as compared with the panchayat elections.
