YSRC objects to Palamuru lift scheme

June 15, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 07:06 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Joining the voice with the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh, president of YSR Congress Party, Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, has raised objections against the Palamuru-Ranga Reddy lift irrigation project taken up by Telangana Government.

He alleged that the project has been taken up with out getting any clearances and said it is likely to have an impact on the water resources in Rayalaseema, Prakasam and Nellore districts in AP.

In a letter addressed to Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharati, Mr. Reddy requested her intervention in the matter as the interests of farmers in six districts of AP are at stake.

Mr. Reddy, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in AP, pointed out that the two Telugu States have to get clearances from the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) as per the AP Reorganisation Act and the Central Water Commission (CWC) while taking up any new irrigation project. There is no allocation of water to Palamuru project either in assured or in surplus of Krishna waters.

The ayacut under Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar projects would have difficulties with the Palamuru lift irrigation project for which Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had laid foundation stone on June 11.

He said that the districts of Rayalaseema, Prakasam and Nellore are drought-prone and the Palamuru project is highly detrimental to the interests of farmers and other sections of people there. Further, it would have serious ramifications by destabilising the settled ayacut not only under Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar projects but also under Prakasam Barrage, the YSR Congress chief said. Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy requested the Union Minister to intervene and resolve the matter as it involves the interests of farmers in entire Krishna basin in AP.

Project taken up without getting any clearances and it is likely to have an impact on the water resources in Rayalaseema, Prakasam and Nellore districts,

Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy,

YSR Congress president

It affects ayacut under Srisailam, NSP, Prakasam Barrage, says Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy
