‘Viewers can easily flag content they think is offensive’

“We look forward to community policing and flagging content. We are hiring 10,000 moderators to monitor and pull down content flagged by the community. YouTube is taking this issue seriously,” said Satya Raghavan, head of Entertainment YouTube in India, when asked about the problem of fake news and fake viral content.

Speaking on the sidelines of a presser on Fanfest, an annual event to promote local talent, Mr. Raghavan said the kind of content the viewers see is what they like. “It is based on an algorithm which factors in multiple things to push content. About 60% of the content that the viewers see is pushed by the algorithm based on viewers’ habits,” informed Mr. Raghavan.

Fanfest, which began as a small event in 2014, is now a five-city event and for the first time had its kick-off in Hyderabad. Among the performers in the city are dancer Melvin Louis, a comedy group known as Viva, Shanmukh Jaswanth, Kiraak Hyderabadiz, Warangal Diaries etc. Reeling out statistics, Mr. Raghavan said India was one of the fasting growing markets. “About 1.5 billion people watch content every month. And one billion hours of content is being created everyday. In India, of the 400 million people accessing Internet, 330 million are accessing it on smart phones. Year on year, there is a 400% growth in this space,” he said.

YouTube has been in a spot of bother as fake news has multiplied over the past few years and channels streaming extremist and violent content have proliferated leading to calls for a crackdown. “We have community policies and safety guidelines. Viewers can easily flag content they think is objectionable and action will be taken,” he said.
