‘Women are tough opponents in politics'

People with reputation for social service and easy accessibility to people are said to give their opponents a run for their money in politics.

But for Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, women are tougher opponents than men in politics.

“Women can straightaway walk into kitchen and convince the household on their ideas and this is not that easy for men,” he says.

The Chief Minister was addressing the participants of a seminar organised in connection with the International Women's Day by Commonwealth Parliamentary Association on the Assembly premises on Monday.

Lively interaction

He participated in a lively interaction with girls, drawn from different colleges in the Twin Cities, who raised questions ranging from liquor sale and the quality of services in educational and health institutions.

On prohibition, he said past experiences showed that it would lead to smuggling and illicit brewing. The government had to weigh different aspects, not just the monetary considerations, for allowing sale of liquor.

The new Excise Policy to be enforced from June this year would focus on an intensive campaign to educate people on the ill-effects of liquor consumption. “But the reform should start from home. Stop giving food to men who come home after drinking. Such steps will go a long way in desisting men from liquor,” he said.

Expressing concern that parents as well as students were restricting their career options to either engineering or medicine streams, he exhorted the youth, girls in particular, to chose politics as a career if they were firm on ushering in changes in society.

Assembly Speaker Nadendla Manohar presided over the seminar that was attended by several women legislators.
