Woman says no to marriage proposal, killed by daughter, friend

A teenaged girl along with her friend allegedly killed her mother and disposed of the body on the railway tracks near Ramannapeta village of Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district before lodging a missing complaint at Hayathnagar police station.

Police said that P. Keerthi Reddy (19) and her friend Shashi Kumar strangulated the victim Rajitha Reddy (38) to death on October 19 after she refused their marriage proposal. “On October 19, Rajitha invited Shashi to her house in Dwakaranagar of Munaganuru village, where they had heated exchange of words over his relationship with Keerthi. Rajitha refused the marriage proposal as they belong to different communities,” an officer associated with the investigation of the case said.

On the same evening, when Rajitha was sleeping, her daughter along with Shashi strangulated her with a chunni and kept the body in the house for three days, he said. Rajitha’s husband Srinivas Reddy is a truck driver and would go out on duty frequently. The couple along with their daughter Keerthi mirgated to Hayathnagar from their native village Ramannapeta three years ago.

“Fearing Srinivas’ return, on October 22 Keerthi and Shashi shifted Rajitha’s body in a car and placed it on the railway tracks near Ramannapeta to make it appear like a suicide ,” police said, adding that for three days Shashi was staying with Keerthi in the same house with the dead body in the next room.

Srinivas returned home on October 26 and found the house locked. He was unable to reach his wife over phone, and called his daughter, who told him that she was staying at their relatives’ place as Rajitha locked the house and her phone was not reachable. She also told him about her plans of visiting Visakhapatnam.

Keerthi lodged a complaint stating that her mother was missing, following which a woman missing case was registered and police started the investigation. In her complaint, she told police that her parents were frequently quarrelling as Srinivas was addicted to alcohol.

During investigation, they found that Rajitha’s body was recovered near the railway tracks at Ramannapeta by Government Railway Police. “Initially we thought the victim committed suicide by jumping in front of a running train.

However post-mortem examination revealed that she died due to strangulation,” the investigators said. Keerthi narrated the incident to her father who grew suspicious and confronted her after seeing the ‘well-maintained’ house. Following which, the teenager and her friend Shashi were taken into custody for questioning on Sunday. Rajitha tried to fix her daughter’s alliance with Balram, who is among a few other suspects being questioned by the police. So far no arrests have been made, the officer said.
