‘Scribes being harassed for doing their duty’

Journalists associated with the Telangana State Union of Working Journalists (TSUWJ) staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate in Jagtial town on Wednesday condemning the registration of false cases against nine journalists, who reported about the transportation of EVMs in a private vehicle in Jagtial town on Monday night.

The TUWJ Jagtial district unit leaders led by its president J Surender, secretary Swamy and others participated in the dharna and flayed the district authorities for registration of criminal cases, who, they said, did their duty. They later represented Collector A Sharath and SP Sindhu Sharma and urged them to withdraw the cases. .

Meanwhile, TSUWJ president N. Shekar and general secretary K. Virahat Ali demanded that the police withdraw the cases immediately. They said the cases were booked to threaten journalists who were exposing the undemocratic practices of the government and the officials.

They said the arrest is an attempt the throttle the voice of media and free speech and this is against the Constitution. They said all the journalists should come on a single platform to condemn the police action or else such incidents would continue, hitting the very survival of journalists and freedom of speech in the State.
